OPTIMAL HEALING ENVIRONMENTS WORKSHOP RESULTS

THE WISH TO COOPERATE
The follow-up of the conference was set by a two days workshop at the NAI (Netherlands Architecture Institute): from 29th to 30th of November 3 teams of scientists and architects/ designers worked together on the development of stress-reducing zones for hospitals, so-called ‘powerpoints’. The international workshop was conceived and directed by designer Gemma Koppen and psycho-biologist dr. Tanja C. Vollmer. Besides the 5 invited scientists who e.g. represented the areas time perception, aesthetics, patient empowerment, and medical care, eight architects and designers participated in the workshop. The latter had to qualify in a particular competition before-hand.

STUDY CASE: ERASMUS MC
At the start of the workshop, the participants studied the Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam. Liesbeth van Heel, who is Sector Manager of the Expertise Group of the New Erasmus MC, gave an impressive introduction to the efforts of establishing a ‘Healing Environment’, additionally to a high-performance medical center.

PATIENT JOURNEY
Afterwards 3 patients of the Erasmus MC took the participants on “their personal journey” through the huge complex and gave very informative insights into their feelings and experiences. Mental and mind maps were conducted to distinguish eustress from distress zones.
