In Waldstadt, a residential district in Karlsruhe located on the edge of the forest, the VOLKSWOHNUNG housing association owns 29 buildings with 1,303 apartments. With 667 apartments – spread over 14 buildings – about half of them are located on Königsberger Straße, the southernmost street in the Waldstadt forest location. While VOLKSWOHNUNG has extensively modernized the buildings on Insterburger Strasse and Kolberger Strasse in recent years, the buildings and residential environment on Königsberger Strasse are still in a very poor structural condition. For this reason, VOLKSWOHNUNG is planning extensive measures to further develop its housing stock in a sustainable manner.
Building on the Waldstadt-Waldlage urban development framework plan, VOLKSWOHNUNG has initiated a step-by-step sustainable development strategy for its portfolio along Königsberger Strasse: In addition to modernizing the aging buildings in the south subarea, redesigning the residential environment and improving the parking situation, the long-term goal in the north sub-area is to build new buildings that will supplement the offering with smaller, barrier-free apartments and with larger family apartments. In 2021, Kopvol architecture & psychology is commissioned to accompany the project on the client side.
