NKOC_ONTWIKKELING VAN DESIGN CRITERIA_NL 2010

Those who want to create a Healing Environment need evidence to base a future design on science and not on popularizing literature. By order of the DCOG kopvol investigated the spatial needs of children with cancer, their parents and professionals in comparison to the current situation of pediatric oncology in the Netherlands. Beside the lack of basic architectural quality that refers to basic needs – like age-adapted height or space for physical exercise – kopvol discovered 5 crucial space-qualities which correlate significantly with child development. To guarantee the integration of these qualities into the future design of the DCOG (building starts 2013) kopvol translated them into design criteria which will be part of the program of requirements. These design criteria will lead the architect in realizing an evidence based Healing Environment which actively supports cancer children’s recovery and development.
