In Germany, problems of shrinking occur especially in the Ruhr Area, where coal mines emptied the ground and unemployment emptied out the cities.

During an ideas and design workshop in Essen organized by Netherlands Consulate General Düsseldorf, Art Foundation Kunstelevator and the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, kopvol was invited to come up with ideas for the revitalization of the Ruhr Area for creative economy (Kreativ Quartiere).
We developed an expose-and-work concept to raise awareness amongst the inhabitants of the Ruhr cities and express the potential of emptiness for the creative people. Unoccupied houses were marked with objects that visualized the emptiness inside out.

An abandoned IKEA building at the highway A1 in Unna was transformed into a museum of emptiness (Museum der Leere). A flexible pneu-like skin defined a dynamic volume at the inside of the building. Inside this non-structure emptiness is shaped anew by each movement of the visitor and always resonating with others.
The new 'inner skin' is translucent and illuminating. Shadow plays come into being. Alternately being veiled and viewed. The membranes do not limit themselves to the interior but extend into a denunciated visibility - reconnecting themselves to the marked unoccupied houses all over the Ruhr Area.
