Architectural design of doctors' offices
Architektur von Artztpraxen

The study investigated architectural design criteria of 20 different doctor’s offices specialized in oncology in 4 different cities in Germany (Fulda, Munich, Berlin, Hannover) and their effect on the working climate and the well-being of the staff.
We examined three categories:
a) Design criteria that support interaction (sightlines, barriers, meeting point, privacy, withdrawal);
b) basic criteria (volume, division and climate of the space)  and
c) contact to nature (light, air).
The results provide strong evidence for the existence of a supportive environment, meaning that architectural design criteria can influence staff working satisfaction, wellbeing and the working climate in oncologic doctors' offices.
The results are highly important considering the increasing number of staff-members that suffer from burn out after working for only 5 years in the field of oncology.
