HISTORICAL CITYMUSEUM KASSEL (DE 2009)
STADTMUSEUM KASSEL (DE 2009)

Kopvol decided for a simple design, which remained within the existing contours, only lifting up the roof to create a panoramic view to the historic Herculus statue a few kilometers uphill.
The new gathering roof space opened up for public events and created a new heart for the building in the existing courtyard below.
Transforming the courtyard from a moist, grey and unused space into a spacious, bright multilevel glass covered and welcoming area, the new heart lures the visitor into the building. It gives him a glance of the whole building before actually getting into the exhibition and thus creating a pleasant sense of curiosity, control and calmness.

The space is characterized by a sculptural staircase which naturally guides the visitor to the exhibition area. The routing through the exhibitions is at each level interrupted by a lounging area with a re-connecting view to the city and the historic surrounding. This way especially older people and groups of pupils can contemplate while breathing the air of history around them.
